Pie Sisters is a famous pie shop in Washing DC. A friend had said that it was a must see in the city, especially for a pie lover (me! me! me!). Pie Sisters is a cute little cafe at the edge of Georgetown. They serve mostly sweet pies (apple, cherry, bourbon chocolate, coconut cream, key lime, etc.) and a few selections of savory pies (chili, chicken pot, country tomato).
This is exactly what I want to build - a place where friends can come and chat over a slice of pie! My friend and I sampled the bourbon chocolate and an apple cup. We were also give two mini blueberry lemonade bites for knowing the secret word of the day. The bourbon chocolate was a gooey chocolate pecan pie. Though I couldn’t tell for sure, I think the crust must’ve been made with shortening or lard as it’s flaky and has a lighter bite.
The blueberry lemonade bites were a nice cold treat. It was tart and sweet and custardy. The flavor combos were perfect for summer. Too bad it was also semi freezing the day we went. But that type of drinks to pie treats is gonna come in handy this summer :D
While in Georgetown of course we had to stop in Georgetown Cupcakes of DC Cupcakes fame. We had to wait in a line that was led out the door, which was completely perfect for us to decide what we wanted.
There were SO MANY flavors! Multiple chocolate and vanilla flavors, red velvet, coconut, peanut butter, pineapple, banana, and more!!
We ended up getting a half dozen - chocolate^3, red velvet, hummingbird (banana, pineapple, pecan), mint chocolate crunch, chocolate hazelnut, and coconut. My favorite was definitely the hummingbird. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of them. This was when I remembered.
So I took off last week to spend some time in the US. There are a few reasons for this break:
1) I’ve been balancing baked. and my full time job for a while and was beginning to wear myself out. I loved both my jobs, but I was starting to not be able to give 100% to each, mainly because of time and the fact that I was running on fumes.
2) I’ve made the decision to do baked. full time so I am embarking on a pie search across America to get inspiration and ideas for new recipes.
3) Why wouldn’t I jump on the opportunity to go on a pie search across America?
So for the next month I’ll be driving from the East Coast to the South all the way across the country to the West and trying out some of the best known pie shops and dessert parlors.
This is the first pie sighting, in Falls Church, VA. It was purely pizza pie, but the name was fantastic. Kinda makes me want to consider putting pie in my name. But tomorrow, we hit an actual famous pie shop. Stay tuned :D
